English composer/arranger/orchestrator/conductor. Born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England 1924. After high school became professional woodwind/sax player/arranger, touring in bands starting at age 15, broadcasting from age 16 and recording at 17. From 1946-50 studied harmony, counterpoint and composition with Matyas Seiber. During same period studied conducting with Walter Goehr.

Served for ten years on the Music Branch Executive Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, and was a founding governor of the Society of Composers & Lyricists.
